Academic

Reception CeremonyThe New Member Reception Ceremony formally recognises and celebrates the outstanding academic achievements of its members. By far the largest event of the MGK calendar, the Ceremony also marks the official induction of members into the Society. The New Member Reception Ceremony provides members with the opportunity to learn about the benefits of membership to Golden Key and meet the current Executive Committee. Supplementing this is an inspiring keynote speech and networking opportunities with our distinguished Honorary Members.

The New Member Reception Ceremony is always a highlight of the MGK calendar and truly is a night to remember.

Youth Forum

The Youth Forum is designed to provide high-achieving VCE students the opportunity to experience ‘a day in the life of’ a university student. Students are presented with a topical issue and intellectually engage with the topic through a series of stimulating lectures. In teams, the students apply their key learnings on the topic to argue and defend their viewpoint on the issue.

In the process, students learn how to construct a logical argument, work effectively in groups and deliver an engaging presentation – all of which are skills that are highly transferable to university.

Careers

Professional Development WorkshopMonash Golden Key runs several professional development workshops each year that equip our members with the key soft skills essential for securing graduate and vacation employment. These professional development workshops are presented by experienced industry and recruitment experts, and provide members with an opportunity to enhance their skills in professional communication, case study presentations, and effective networking. Past workshops have been facilitated by the likes of Dun and Bradstreet, Accenture and Deloitte.

The annual Golden Key Careers Cocktail Evening is one of the most highly-anticipated events of the MGK calendar. Exclusive to Golden Key members, the Careers Cocktail Evening is a professional networking event that provides members with access to graduate and vacation work opportunities from leading Australian and international firms.

Careers Cocktail EveningThe Careers Cocktail Evening allows members to develop their skills in communication, networking and business etiquette. The event is also highly regarded by potential employers, who recognise MGK members as driven, high-achieving students and excellent candidates for their vacation and graduate positions.

Among the 21 firms that attended the 2011 Careers Cocktail Evening: Accenture, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Aurecon, L’oreal, Defence Force Recruiting, Australian Secret Intelligence Service and Teach For Australia.

Community Service

Embrace EducationEmbrace Education is a registered non-profit, Monash University student-run organisation that provides free tutoring and mentoring to disadvantaged high-school students in Melbourne. There is a particular focus on assisting students from refugee and migrant backgrounds, as these students tend to face extraordinary difficulties in completing their education.

Through its four programs - homework clubs, individual tutoring, Hands on Health and in-school tutoring – Embrace Education demonstrates a commitment to the provision of quality education, regardless of circumstance.

Monash Golden Key is proud of its dedication to community service. We have partnered with Embrace Education to help bridge the education gap in Victoria. Golden Key members are encouraged to get involved with any of the Embrace Education programs as a volunteer tutor.

Race Against Depression

One of 2011’s most successful and popular events, the Race Against Depression (RAD) is a charity fundraising event based on the hit TV show ‘The Amazing Race’. Teams of three participants compete with other teams to solve cryptic clues guiding them to various locations around the Melbourne CBD. Each team races against the clock to outwit and outrun their competitors, all the while raising funds towards the fight against depression.

All of the funds raised from this event are donated to charities in need. In 2011, $8011.55 was raised through the event and donated to Lifeline Australia – an organisation that provides crisis support, suicide prevention and mental health support services.
