What is Monash Golden Key?

See the ‘What we do’ article or refer to the About Us section of our website.

How do I join the Golden Key Society?

Membership to Golden Key is by invitation only. To be eligible for membership you are required to be in the top 15% of your faculty studies, based on the previous 12 months of study.

For the Monash Chapter, invitations are generated by Monash University early in the first semester of the academic year.  There is a complex data extraction process that takes place in conjunction with the requirement that the university verify invitees are within the top 15% of their faculty. Strict privacy provisions apply. Golden Key does not access personal academic records or data nor do we hold records of your results or personal details. Once you have received your invitation you will be asked to pay a once-off lifetime membership fee. The amount will be specified in the invitation letter and usually ranges from an amount of $90 to $100.

If you have already been given an invitation to join Golden Key then you can join here.

Will my membership to Golden Key be relinquished if my marks fall after I join the Society?

No - you will continue to be a Golden Key member regardless of the trajectory your marks take after you join the Society. Membership to Golden Key, once paid, is for a lifetime.

I did not receive an invitation, but believe I am eligible to join the Society. What can I do?

The invitation process conducted by Monash University is considered final. Students who have not received invitations are not strictly able to “apply” for membership.

However, if you feel there was an error in the invitation process (ie. your friends in the same faculty scored lower on average than you and were invited to join the Society but you were not), contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with a copy of your unofficial academic record (from WES). We will determine if you were meant to be invited to the Society from this point.

How is Golden Key different from other University-based clubs and societies?

The characteristics that distinguish Golden Key as a Society also apply to the membership more broadly. Specifically, all Golden Key members have: (1) Placed in the top 15% of their faculty during a year of university study, and (2) Originate from any discipline of study.

The international nature of the Society means that joining Golden Key links you to a global network. Through Golden Key, members advance our three pillars of academics (e.g. study abroad), leadership (e.g. attend professional development conferences) and service (e.g. volunteer your time for overseas community projects).

Why don’t I receive emails from Monash Golden Key?

Members must be subscribed to our mailing lists in order to receive email correspondence from MGK. Subscribed members receive a copy of our meeting agendas and minutes (roughly every 2 weeks) and electronic newsletter (usually once per month). To subscribe to our newsletter and meeting documents, just enter your details in the opt-in box at the bottom of the home page. After this point, you should automatically receive a copy of our electronic newsletter and meeting documents to your email inbox.

Please ensure your email address details are up to date to ensure you receive correspondence from MGK.

What is the membership fee (if any) to Monash Golden Key? Do I need to renew my membership to Monash Golden Key each year?

Students who wish to join MGK are only required to pay a one-off fee, usually between $90 and $100. Once this fee is paid, Golden Key members hold lifetime membership to the Society.

I have already joined Golden Key but I continue to receive letters inviting me to join the Society. Do I need to renew my membership each time I receive these letters?

No. Membership to Golden Key is granted by a one-off fee. Once this fee is paid, you remain a member for a lifetime.

Golden Key members are high-achieving students so it is likely that you will score in the top 15% of your faculty several times during your university studies. Due to privacy issues, the mailout process is handled by Monash University. For several reasons, Monash University may not be aware that you are already a member and may therefore send you another invitation.

If you do receive another invitation letter or email, please disregard this as you are still able to enjoy the benefits of your Golden Key membership. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but it is due to factors beyond our control.

I was inducted into Golden Key at a particular university chapter. I have decided to undertake study at a different university. How do I remain involved with Golden Key at this second university?

You can transfer your Golden Key membership to another university chapter if you relocate. For instance, if you relocate to Canberra, you can take part in the activities of the Australian National University (ANU) Golden Key Chapter. Send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to transfer to the other university. We’d also appreciate if you let us know via email (to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) of your decision to transfer your membership.

Can I still become a member of Golden Key if I decide to take up my membership after the deadline specified in my invitation letter?

Yes. Invitations to join the Society are valid for a period of one year so membership can still be taken up after the deadline specified in your invitation letter. However, if you decide to join the Society after the invitation letter, you will not be to attend the New Member Reception Ceremony, at which a new yearly intake of MGK members are inducted into the Society.

If a period of one year expires and you fail to take up your Golden Key membership during this time, you must wait until you receive another invitation letter before you can join the Society. As always, membership to the Society is contingent on students attaining results that place them in the top 15% of their faculty during a year’s worth of study.

What does the Monash Golden Key Executive Committee do?

The MGK Executive Committee is completely run by student members of the Monash University Golden Key Chapter. The Executive Committee is divided into an Upper Executive and Lower Executive. The Upper Executive Committee includes the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. These Committee members are responsible for overseeing the activities of the entire Committee, Chapter planning, handling administrative duties, and managing expenditure to budget.

The Lower Executive Committee includes Portfolio Officers and Support Officers. Portfolio Officers are responsible for organising events that benefit MGK members and/or the community. MGK members are often recruited as volunteers to join subcommittees for a specific event, and assist with event planning and logistics.

Support Officers refer to the IT and Marketing & Public Relations Officers, as well as the Corresponding Secretary. These Officers undertake non-event running duties that support the activities of the Chapter as a whole, such as minute taking (in the absence of the Secretary), photography at events, website maintenance, newsletter and press release preparation, and promotion of the Society’s activities.

If you would like to join the Committee and/or assist with the Monash Golden Key Society in any way, please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and express your interest.

I’m keen to join the Monash Golden Key Executive Committee. How do I join?

There are several ways to join the Monash Golden Key committee. In September each year, we hold our Annual General Meeting (AGM). In the lead up to the AGM, all Golden Key members will have the opportunity to apply for a role on the Upper Executive Committee (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary). We also hold a meeting shortly after the AGM to appoint our Lower Executive Committee, comprised of Portfolio and Support Officers, at which all Golden Key members are most welcome.

However, you don’t need to wait for September to join the Committee. If you want to get involved with planning and organising MGK events, send an expression of interest to our Secretary ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ), who will then notify you of the next Committee meeting. Come along to a meeting, start helping out with tasks and you can be a valuable part of the Monash Golden Key committee. It’s that easy!

If you want to assist in planning a few and/or specific MGK event, why not join one of our volunteer subcommittees? For each event that we organise, we engage a group of dedicated Golden Key members who volunteer their time to assist with event planning, organisation and logistics. Prior to events that require a subcommittee, expressions of interest from volunteers will be sought from the MGK membership via our e-newsletter and social media channels. All you need to do is send in an expression of interest and you’re part of the subcommittee!

How do I register to attend a Golden Key conference?

The Monash University Golden Key Chapter and our Asia-Headquarters both advertise the dates and locations of regional and international conferences.

Members who are subscribed to email correspondence from MGK will receive several emails alerting them of the fact that a Golden Key conference is approaching.

If you are interested in attending a Golden Key conference, send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will provide you with additional information regarding subsidies, attendees, possible expenses, the conference agenda and anything other necessary information.

Registration for both the regional and international conferences is completed via the Golden Key International website.

Simply follow the links in the emails you have received regarding the conference or the links provided in the conference section of the Monash Golden Key website and sign up – it’s definitely worth it!

Monash Golden Key generally provide subsidies for Golden Key members to attend conferences. However, the number of subsidies available is strictly limited. To take advantage of these subsidies, ensure that you register for the conference as soon as possible. When you are notified that MGK is inviting applications for conference subsidies (either via email, email or social media), send your completed subsidy application form to the Secretary at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Please note that the provision of subsidies is subject to availability and the evaluation of subsidy applications – do not automatically assume that your conference expenses will be subsidised.
