Keen to get involved in Monash Golden Key? Why not take part in one of the most thought-provoking and rewarding events on MGK’s annual calendar? The Youth Forum is one of Monash Golden Key’s most successful and established events. This unique event gives Monash University students the opportunity to impart their knowledge and experience to eager and bright Year 12 students from across Victoria. The aim of the event is to provide attending students with an informal ‘taste’ of university life, and challenge them to think critically about a relevant and topical issue. Students will be driven to engage, question, apply, reflect and learn. The theme for this year’s Youth Forum is ‘Carbon Pricing – a Question of Sustainability’. Students will have the opportunity to hear from expert lecturers from a variety of disciplines, each of whom will provide their own unique perspective on the topic. The attending students will be divided into groups and asked to develop a creative response – skit, mock interview, role play (you get the idea!) – to present their stance on the issue. A new addition to his year’s event is our student panel, where volunteers on the day will be given the opportunity to field questions from the audience regarding their university experience. We are looking for motivated, proactive and personable Monash University students who are keen to assist as facilitators on the day. Your role will be to encourage and guide discussion amongst a small group of Year 12 students in relation to this year’s forum topic. A select number of facilitators will also be given the opportunity to sit on this year’s panel and share their university experience. Make no mistake - our volunteers are well looked after! In addition to a complimentary lunch, morning and afternoon tea on the day, facilitators will receive valuable coaching on public speaking and facilitation skills by representatives from Teach For Australia (http://www.teachforaustralia.org/). To register your interest as a volunteer at this year’s Youth Forum, send expressions of interest to MGK Academic Officers Harry Li and Jennifer Do at

Interested in getting involved with Monash Golden Key? The 2011 Youth Forum for Tomorrow's Intellectual Leaders is the perfect place to start! We require volunteers to help out at the annual Youth Forum for Tomorrow's Intellectual Leaders on Wednesday 20th of July 2011. It will be held at Monash University Clayton Campus. The topic for this year's youth forum is: Communication Generation - is social media a good thing? Social media has been connecting individuals to the rest of the world. It has revolutionised the way people interact, communicate, work and establish relationships with one another, both personally and professionally. With the constant rise of some globally known social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, the influence of social media has come to prominence, particularly amongst the younger generations. There are two sides to the argument of whether social media is a good thing. Some experts point to the fact that the emergence of social media has supported the basic human right of free speech by creating innovative virtual spaces for free expression. Contrary to this, some argue that our society has overdosed on the medicine of social media due to its intrusion into everyday life and its easy accessibility. This has led to the existence of a myriad of social media related issues such as cyber crimes, privacy issues and information leaks, many of which have the tendency to be detrimental to society.

Students Teaching English to Women (STEW) is a Monash club which provides one-on-one tutoring to migrant and refugee adults. While teaching English is the focus, volunteers may be able to assist students with day-to-day tasks such as learning to take public transport.STEW works in collaboration with Adult Multicultural Education Services (AMES). This year, the training will be held Monday nights at Monash, Clayton from 14th September-19th October. The course is conducted by AMES and is free for all volunteers.
